Pool Algicide Instructions for Use
- Refer to charts below for dosage rates
- Shock your pool, if necessary, 24 hours before adding Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide
- If using calcium hypochlorite, wait 24 hours before adding Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide
- Do NOT use copper based algaecides with Ionizer, Baquacil or Nature 2 systems
- Ensure filtration system is working properly. Backwash first if necessary
- Ensure pH range is 7.2 - 7.8
- Add proper dosage of Pool Algicide directly to the pool and distribute over as wide an area as possible
- For SEVERE algae, adjust pH to 7.2 and add double the normal dose
- IMPORTANT: Do not shock within 48 hours of using Pool Algicide. If using calcium hypochlorite as a shocking agent, dilute in a bucket of water and pour over a large area.
What are algae?
Algae are actually microscopic plants. Like all plants, algae require nutrients. Algae obtain their food from leaves, plants and organic matter (including bathers). There are in excess of thirty thousand different species! In an effort to make identification easier, the swimming pool industry classifies algae as blue-green, mustard, pink and black algae (also known as black-spot algae). Blue-green algae tend to be of the floating variety, whereas mustard algae and black algae cling to the pool interior, particularly cracks and crevices. The clinging species of algae are the most difficult to control.
Can chlorine be used as an algaecide?
It is true that chlorine compounds can be used to treat algae infestations. However, chlorine resistant algae consume large quantities of chlorine, reducing the free chlorine available to control bacteria and viruses.
Is Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide okay with all chlorine compounds?
Yes.
What is the level of copper in the pool water when using Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide?
When using the normal dosage rate, the copper level is 0.26 ppm. This is well below the acceptable NSPI level (0.3 ppm) and also below the WHO level (1.5 ppm).
What prevents the copper in Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide from dropping out of solution and staining the pool?
Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide is a specially formulated product containing a unique organo copper complex. This simply means that the copper ion has been complexed to stop it from coming out of solution and possibly causing a pool to stain. The added bonus is that the complex last longer in the water and provides extra algae protection. We guarantee that Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide will not stain a pool. (This guarantee is dependent on the pool being maintained within NSPI levels for balanced water and Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide being used according to the stated directions).
What is the importance of pH?
All algae cells are surrounded by a waxy coating (the cell wall). Penetration by chemicals is made easier by reducing the pH of the pool water prior to adding an algaecide. A pH between 7.0 and 7.2 is desirable.
What is the importance of brushing?
Regular brushing with a suitable stiff brush is of benefit in algae removal. Brushing helps to break the waxy coating mentioned above making the task of the algaecide easier.
What about removing phosphates?
We mentioned earlier that algae are plants. Like all plants, algae need nutrients to survive. Lo-Chlor has introduced Lo-Phos. This product is not an algaecide. Lo-Phos removes phosphates (a common algae nutrient) from pool water and so hinders the algaes' growth. For a problem pool, Lo-Phos can be used with chlorine or Lo-Chlor Pool Algicide.
